- Who are some of your favorite female characters in gaming?
In honor of Metroid: Samus Returns releasing, I want to do a topic on some of the best female characters in video games
my main ones would have to be Maya Amano from Persona 2, Celes Chere from Final Fantasy VI and Alisa Landale from Phantasy Star, all of which I prefer over 90% of male characters in video games of course there is also the more popular ones like Lara Croft, Chun Li and Jill Valentine But of course, the most prominent heroine in gaming, at least among older gamers, is probably Samus Aran, solely for being one of the earliest female characters by a major company on a major IP that wasn't held back by some crutch I mean, Baraduke might have beat Metroid by a year, but Baraduke didn't go on to sell 2.7 million units and spawn a successful franchise

Celes Chere, Nina Williams, Sophita, Aerith, etc.
Too many good ones.

Dorothy Mistral for Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier
What? I suppose Mimi from Duel Masters also counts, though technically she was created for anime to sell a card game adaption of Magic the Gathering to Japan, and the game is merely an artifact of competing with Yu-Gi-Oh! Also its notable for having western exclusive filler arch, that has nothing to do with the actual Japanese version. Although technically its the Abridged style official dub that's mostly responsible for Mimi's awesomeness, I say mostly since she's still the best thing about it either way. To Quote Mimi, "Go me." |

I suppose Mimi from Duel Masters also counts depends if you like her because of the character she had in the game, or in the show if it's only the show, then it doesn't really count but if they shine through in the actual game as well, then it counts basically, if the show didn't exist, would you like the character just as much?

Estelle bright from Trails in the sky pretty easily.
way more dialogue then pretty much anyone else due to the nature of her game being super wordy and the dialogue is great. super fun character as the main character with a ton of personality (helped by Xseeds awesome localization) tons of character development and a fairly realistic growth in general. also not annoyingly fan serviced in design and fairly imperfect character making her feel a a lot more believable.

Samus - Just the whole bad ass vibe she's always given. But over time she shows some interesting personality traits like in some of the cut scenes in Metroid Fusion ( Not other M lol ).
Bayonetta - I just love her personality. I totally dig the "when you play my game, you play by MY rules" type attitude she sports. But they still show her personal attachment to other characters in the game to showcase that even as a powerful witch, she still very much cares for those she becomes close too. Latias - Sorry, ever since the 5th movie, which was the first I actually watched in Japanese. I loved this girl. Cute and fun, totally would hang out in altomare with her whenever I got the opportunity lol. Shanoa - I haven't played the game too much, I did finally pick it up a while ago but have yet to finish it. I like how she plays and I like the character over all though. Maybe it's the fact that I recall this game being a little bit more difficult then your standard now-a-days Castlevania game on top of things as well. Freya Crescent - While I thought her story was a little meh. Her search for her boyfriend/husband was very shallow... He just pops up at times and they don't really dwell on it all that much. Almost as if it was a last minute thing. I like her character outside of that, not to mention I thought how she played was a lot of fun. Cynder - Interesting enough, I enjoyed playing her more then Spyro in the last game of the series, mostly because of her abilities I tended to use more then Spyros. But I liked her character in all of the games over all. |
I tend to enjoy characters that are a bit flawed, regardless of whether they are male or female. But some of the ladies that stand out to me include:
Pratty from Summon Night: SwordCraft Story 1 (GBA) was delightfully awkward yet determined at the same time. Maribel from Dragon Quest VII is growing on me. I love her attitude and impatience with Hero and Kiefer. Kat from Gravity Rush 2 is hardly your typical, overconfident hero. In a world where everyone is looking to profit their own interests, her naiveté and quirky personality get her into all kinds of interesting situations.

Samus (Metroid), Estelle (Trails in the Sky), Lea (CrossCode), Maribel (DQVII), Kat (Gravity Rush), Azel (Panzer Dragoon Saga), Fall-From-Grace (Planescape Torment), Marin (Link's Awakening), Maya (Ace Attorney), SHODAN (System Shock... does an AI count?), Maya (Persona 2)
Several others worth noting.
There's a mystery to be uncovered here, that's for sure. And I get the feeling the truth is beyond my wildest imagination.

Samus is up there super high for me. Maybe my fav overall.
Lara Croft because of her overall badass w/o any sort of powers or armor Terra (ff6). I adore her character and struggles throughout that game Tifa (ff7) for a similar reason. She gets badass points like Lara though because she's a hand to hand fighter. GeneralFox posted... Finally a badass female in that series. And yeah, that game is much more difficult than the other Castlevanias, especially near the start.

Krystal - Star Fox
I was browsing some furry board back in the day and found some fanart of her. Within a couple of weeks I'd found a afterschool job and bought a Gamecube. Failsafe - Destiny 2 The AI from a wrecked ship that crashed on a Planetoid a long time ago. She's a little deranged, switches from cheerful happy mode to grumpy at the drop of a hat and is constantly sarcastic Kat -Gravity Rush I don't even know where to begin. Something about her is just incredibly endearing, I love her design and story. Also Midna, Freya Crescent and Cynder. There are plenty more, but I'll just leave it at that for now.
Love conquers everything ... except knives, swords, axes, guns, spears, fists, rocks, strong gusts of wind, and/or dangerous wild animals.

Favourites
Pretty much the entire main female cast from Persona 4 Golden; Chie, Rise, Naoto & Yukiko with Chie being my absolute favourite due to her fighting spirit, wacky comments & awesome personality. Cortana, Halo series. Not a fan of how 343 have portrayed her in the last two entries, 4 & 5 Guardians, but I absolutely loved her throughout Combat Evolved & her developing relationship with the MasterChief. Just a very big fan of her VA (Laura Bailey) in general. Isabelle, Animal Crossing series. Just straight up adorable with such a fun loveable personality. Always makes me smile when I see her in ACNL. Hatsune Miku, Project series. Been a big fan of the vocaloid since the Project Diva series on the ps vita, pouring in hundreds of hours. Never a dull moment with her, plus being a fellow guitarist I'd love to jam with her. Viridi, Kid Icarus Uprising. Gotta love her childish attitude to everything. By far my favourite character in the series. Honourable mentions: Lissa & Anna, Fire Emblem Lynne, Ghost Trick Phantom Detective Maya Fey, Ace Attorney series Ayla, Marie & Lucca, Chrono Trigger All witches from Stella Glow plus Nonoka. Might come across as eye rolling & cliche but I though each character arc & development was superb with a lot of surprisingly deep feels. Nonoka FTW! Nin Nin NIIIIIN!

Samus and Lara Croft, tbh. Then again they're really the most popular ones, and as far as Lara Croft I prefer the reboot version.

Literally, way too many to list. But here are some that I don't think have been mentioned:
Elly (Xenogears) Sun Shang Xiang, Lian Shi, and others (Dynasty Warriors) Sniper Wolf (Metal Gear Solid) Tia, Selan (Lufia 2) Luna (Lunar Silver Star Story) Kasumi, Lei Fang, Honoka (DOA) Agnes, Edea (Bravely Default) Asuka, Xiaoyu, Kunimitsu (Tekken) Seong Mi-na, Xianghua, Taki, Hilde, Leixia (Soul Calibur) Aya (Parasite Eve) Alicia Melchiott (Valkyria Chronicles) Sami, Rachel, Sonia (Advance Wars) Kid (Chrono Cross) Monica (Dark Cloud 2) Etna (Disgaea) Nanami, Sialeeds, Viki, Chris (Suikoden series) Amaterasu (Okami) And so many, many more.... I would have listed from my favorite series/games, like Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, Chrono Trigger (Schala), Tales, Atelier, and a ton of other lesser RPG's, fighters, and so on....but then it'd be like, almost every single one and too many to list, and some people have already mentioned some of them anyway.

Marina Liteyears (Mischief Makers, kinda surprised nobody mentioned her yet)
Yae (Goemon series) Samus Aran (Metroid) Shanoa (Order of Ecclesia) Charlotte (Portrait of Ruin) Blaze Fielding (Streets of Rage) Kunoichi (The Ninja Warriors) Shantae (Shantae series) Asha (Monster World IV) Claire Redfield & Jill Valentine (Resident Evil, in older games anyway) Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) Kid (Chrono Cross) Dixie Kong (Donkey Kong Country) Aile and Ashe (Megaman ZX/ZXA) I think that's all of them... most of them were really important to me growing up. Taught me girls can kick ass, too.

Shonoa (Castlevania Order of Ecclesia) I love her play style and overall design
Virginia (Wild Arms 3) She's so optimistic, and I like that she's the main character even though she plays more of a support role in battle. Freya (FF IX) She's a badass rat chick. I also like that she's a dragoon who isn't a flaky jerk (I'm looking at you, Kaine!) Terra (FF VI) Probably my favorite game in the series, and I like that she discovers the power of love by raising and protecting a village of children rather than having a generic love interest. Shion (Xenosaga series) I get that she becomes kind of a jerk by the end of the series, but I was really rooting for her by the end. She went through so much crap. |
