Xenoblade 3D did it better. The Shulk amiibo was simply a way to get music and gallery items more quickly. But you could still get everything without having one. Definitely an annoyance to do it this way, since I have no interest in Metroid amiibos but love sound test options in games.

You don't see the modern game industry hiding things like concept art galleries and sound tests behind ANY additional means these days, let alone over $10 of on-disc DLC apiece.

This kind of thing wouldn't bother me nearly as much if Amiibos were the kind of thing that could be easily obtained without having to take time out of a day to refresh a pre-order page that's inevitably going to sell out it's stock in five minutes, with a good chunk of those purchases being from scalpers. Having to do all of that to unlock content that's usually historically obtainable in the game irks me. Say what you want about pre-order or on disc DLC, but at least that more often than not doesn't have a *limited while supplies last* caveat to it.
It's pretty much a pick your poison situation. I'd rather straight up pay for DLC unlocks instead of having to jump through hoops to buy a figurine just for the same function. This is assuming of course, that there isn't another in-game way to obtain the content.

I'd have no problem with Amiibo if we could unlock content in other ways. I don't want crappy plastic toys around; I've got a tiny condo and I don't need another collection.
Plus locking ENTIRE GAME MODES behind amiibo purchases and not having that content available any other way is super shitty. If I am already paying $40 for the game, I shouldn't be forced to spend another $30-40 to get the WHOLE game. DLC is fine when it's limited to perks and costumes. When you're locking levels and game modes and dungeons, that is NOT fine whether the DLC is physical or digital. I've simply stopped buying games that engage in this kind of practice. Sell me the WHOLE game without BS, or I don't buy at all.

i am sick of this mentality in gaming where you are pushed to consume "for now on the short term", and toss the game away as soon as you finish it because it's not a sustainable thing.
The community already has a solution to create their own Amiibo out of the standard NFC tags Nintendo uses in them, which you can get several tags per dollar. You can now create them with just blank tags and the 3DS itself. Saves with the content unlocked can also be decrypted and shared. That solution will persist.
Not many know about that and even if they did, the figurines are pretty...tantalizing to say so the least and some just aren't comfortable with the tag thing. Until the solution can over take the problem, I don't think amiibo's are going to die out soon. But when they do, it won't be with a bang, but with a whimper. Only a matter of time until Nintendo fucks up hard enough to use that fabled stock pile of cash people think Nintendo has piled up somewhere./BinBinricecake - Morgan - Warrior/~"You're brothers-in-nobody's-arms. Family that's lonely together is bro-nly together"
-TeddyCan't say I agree with them locking a whole difficulty behind amiibos. Seems like paid hard modes are becoming a thing with Nintendo. I remember a time when companies included a hard mode in their game. For free.Read the mania: http://www.fanfiction.net/~nonexistinghero
In SA2, it's Super Sonic and Hyper Shadow. For someone that hasn't bought the amiibo for any other game and is just wanting to get them for this game alone, that would mean that the retail price to cough up for Music, Gallery, and Hard Mode DLC would be... $54. $54 USD for Music, Gallery, and Fusion/Hard Mode.
Jesus. Christ.http://www.backloggery.com/sanctuarii
All of my 3DS and Vita info, all in one convenient place! If there is no other way to get the stuff like gallery or sound test, or if the fusion suit is actual hard mode, they screwed up. As and owner of regular 3DS there is zero chance I'd buy a $20 hunk of plastic to then buy a $13 figurine to get the damn thing working. Its less of an issue if they didn't keep creating new Amiibo for every damn game, then not supporting them anywhere else. But if the do they also support the alternate as something different so for some reason you now need both. Though 3DS is a worse offender because some of us can't even use the Amiibo content without throwing down $20 on top of them.(edited 5 days ago)quoteHonestly yeah do not support this nonsense unless you like the collectible figurines. I like the amiibos, so I was gonna get them anyways, but it's real shit that they are locking something that seems so basic behind them.
What I'm gonna do is buy the amiibos and pass them around to whoever wants the content. Try finding game groups in your area that do this. I don't believe that each amiibo is usable only once."Poop"Like someone already mentioned...buy a bulk set of nfc tags which are hilariously cheap and download a program to write the amiibo to them. Or use something like a powersave or a device I'm not sure if I can mention without getting modded if you have the extra money and want an easier solution.
The time you spend doing one of the above will solve your amiibo woes forever and certainly a much better use of your time bitching about it on gamefaqs. It's what I did and I'm never looking back.Want to see humanity at it's worst? Go online and read forums or comment pages!ChuckRoast posted...I have a feeling that they will be unlocked normally. IIRC, there was some confusion about the UFO ability in Planet Robobot being an amiibo exclusive and it turned out to be unlockable.
Yeah... after you've already completed everything there is to do in the game and so leaving you with no more reason to use it outside of goofing around. So using the amiibo gives you a game breaking ability such as energy, missile, or special reserve tanks along with the other things detailed in this thread. I'd rather not use the amiibo and feel like I needed assistance with an extra tank but the Fusion suit difficulty could be something I'd like to try.
I don't care about an art gallery that'll be leaked online or a sound test that'll be leaked online in better quality. Amiibowalling a difficulty mode is stupid but everything I'm okay with because they're imo extras that aren't necessary to enjoy the game.My fake plants died because I didn't pretend to water them.

Really this is what irks me. If I wanted to pay that much money for Gallery pictures I want a physical art book to look at that details the history, mythology, and biology of the Metroid universe. Same with the music. The game is already bundled with a select Metroid music soundtrack.
When amiibo's were first released I preordered the Samus Smash amiibo. It is still in the package since there was no use to use it out side of Smash 4. I will not take it out of the package to use for Samus Returns (mainly because I want to keep it for collector purposes).
Amiibos really are an impractical accessory for gaming.

Almost 23 years ago now, I walked into a Funcoland to do my usual browsing, and I have good hearing... It's a curse sometimes. Anyway, across the store there is a salesman hassling this woman who obviously was there buying stuff for the kids, trying to insist she needs an official Gameboy Cleaning Kit. I was listening of course and she didn't want to buy it it. This went on for quite a while... When the guy finally said "Nintendo says it's not safe to clean the games with alcohol" I couldn't take it anymore... I walked over and said "excuse me but I overheard your conversation, if you look at the ingredients the cleaning solution is 75% isopropyl alcohol. I got thrown out of the store. I don't think she bought the kit.
That was awesome of you. They had no business throwing you put of the store though, just because they got caught in a lie.I'm a chickSo is it confirmed anywhere that there is even a hard mode in the game at all?

Whether we like it or not, companies exist to make money. So if they see an opportunity to do so, they will. Sometimes even at the expense of the long-term success of a series/product. If people didn't gobble up Amiibos, maybe we wouldn't have to deal with this kind of stuff.FC: 5112-4220-0277I feel it should also be pointed out that the amiibos also aren't sold separately--ONLY as a bundle. I wouldn't call it piracy. And you actually don't need a phone for the latest methods. It can all be done entirely on the 3DS itself. NFC tags aren't anything proprietary or special, and you can burn any ID you want to a tag. Knowing the ID to burn for an Amiibo isn't any different than knowing the password to your computer or a password in a videogame. You can't exactly copyright a password, so it isn't piracy. The unlocked data is in the game cartridge, not on the Amiibo, and duplicating house keys is not a crime. They are just a password you don't have to type in, you just scan a code, and work just like old games with passwords.bungiefan posted...You can't exactly copyright a password, so it isn't piracy.

I wonder how many people actually buy amiibos for the ALC functionality? I only bought my Samus Smash amiibo strictly as a collector item to look at and not to use (not that it did have any use at the time). Nintendo probably doesn't even consider that the end consumer may not be using their product for its intended purpose.Waiting for: (3DS) Culdcept Revolt, Metroid: Samus Returns / (PS4) Marvel Vs. I never got the craze for Amiibo, I would buy maybe one or two, but some people want to have the entire collection and they are the reason why Nintendo keep doing this
If that were the case then Nintendo wouldn't need to lock content behind them because people would buy regardless of extra features.
Nintendo is just getting greedy and trying to expand the Amiibo market even further. They could easily just leave it as a glorified collectible and still make a shit ton of money of them.GT: ShadowElite86

Though 3DS is a worse offender because some of us can't even use the Amiibo content without throwing down $20 on top of them.
Actually, the amiibo dual pack being released with/for the game is THIRTY DOLLARS. The alm and celica dual pack was 23-25 I think but nintendo probably figured 'why not ramp the retail prices juuust a little bit higher?', just look at the fools online who are willing to sped 50+ bucks for just 1 amiibo!/BinBinricecake - Morgan - Warrior/~"You're brothers-in-nobody's-arms. -TeddyJust because they starved us on Metroid for so long they assume we'll gobble up anything now and allow them to get away with amiibos holding hostage the most standard and staple content. And the worst thing is they're probably right..Everything will be fire.If Nintendo is going to lock away significant content behind underproduced amiibos, they need to at least allow you to buy the same content digitally in-game.Owner of a 3DS, Vita, PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One

Or just, you know, unlock it. Like they used to do in their games. I mean seriously, a sound test and art gallery? Sound tests aren't particularly common anymore because plenty of devs will just outright include physical or digital soundtracks as extras with collectors editions, but an ART GALLERY? As in, not an art book in the same vein as the soundtracks I just mentioned, but in-game galleries? Where has there been DLC of an art gallery ANYWHERE in the industry? Legitimate question, someone point this out to me if it's happened, because I don't think it ever has.- Boards

Longtime Kirby, Banjo Kazooie, and Zelda fan.Instead of scouring every single store Across two cities for one of the 5 Amiibos they ship to my city, then having to buy them at 3x the price direct from Japan anyway... I just got a powersaves tag.
Problem solved.
$20 - ALL Amiibo. In the meantime, Nintendo can start figuring out how to use any of the existing 80+ figures I already own.-This post is in no way shape or form a TOS violation-Nanis23 posted...What if they are unlocked normally as well?
Like, 100% under 2 hours gives you hard mode
Didn't watch the video, was it confirmed to be Amiibo exclusive?

If Nintendo want my money, give me a complete game. If not I won't buy their products. That simple. I already don't buy any games from EA, Ubisoft, and Activision because of their business practices so not buying a Metroid game isn't that big a deal to me.
Apart from that you said you were "hyped" and were going to buy it "day 1", which would have been before you even considered or knew this mode existed. If this mode didn't exist at all and there was no amiibo then you'd apparently be perfectly fine spending $40 to buy the exact same thing you're refusing to buy now.'The fact of the matter is that we've been here constantly.
