The development was so "fresh" they didn't even have concept art to at least show us. Hell not even a logo. They probably haven't even written the story yet they are just making the base assets like the pokemon themselves. Anyone who assumed this was coming "soon" only set themselves up to be upset. At least metroid had a logo to show.
And if they are starting from scratch and not using pre made models from the 3DS then I expect it to be pushed at least a year or 2. Not very often does nintendo release a new version of a game without pushing it at least once.

I'm pretty sure that with that e3 trailer, we all kind of figured it wasn't even in the concept phase yet, so nobody was expecting a 2017-18 release

Why are people pretending 2019 is confirmed now? All this tells us is this may not make 2018, i.e it's uncertain if it will. It's literally the exact same information as before put into words ('may take more than a year').

If a Nintendo Switch dedicated Pokemon games is released in 2018, you can rest assured that the game will have been rushed, will lack any kind of after game content, and will have yet again more half-baked multiplayer features.

Between how GO, Sun/Moon, and Pokken were all announced, it's pretty clear The Pokemon Company shells out huge cash for massive announcement campaigns the minute they even think of a concept. In hindsight, a terrible idea, but since Pokemon's entire platform is 'play it safe', they could honestly just rerelease the same exact game in succession - which is, funny enough, what's finally happening with Ultra Sun/Moon - and the fans would be satisfied. That's sort of my issue, and it's definitely an issue I take with TPC and the more easily-appeased members of the Pokemon fanbase on these games, not Nintendo: they go full EA Sports. TPC can have developers announce any project at any time they want, and so long as it's got the Pokemon brand on it, the fans eat it up with zero forethought. In the end, no huge announcement is going to change the fact that the dedicated Pokemon playerbase is doing the exact same thing they likely make fun of Madden, CoD, 2K sports and Assassin's Creed players for doing: churning out the annuals to maximize investment on the financial reports. We thought X/Y was a clean slate, and Sun/Moon is absolutely a step in the right direction, but with the only mainline titles since then being two remakes and two 'alternate universe' cash-ins, it turns out the franchise fatigue is as real as ever So I'm fine with Pokemon Switch taking extra time if it means they're actually going to polish a Pokemon game for once. It actually has me interested, because Game Freak rarely spends more than a year and a half between releases, and I feel like those deadlines have pretty much bankrupted them creatively, so I think the recharge could be good. I'm more worried about a thing like Ultra Sun/Moon: I mean, we get it, X/Y was nice. Good on them for catching up with the mid-2000s and adding 3d visuals. And Sun & Moon are a huge step in the right directiom with Game Freak finally owning up to their creative weaknesses and experimenting with the environment and themes. But Ultra is the kind of thing that even a company as greedy as Capcom or Bamco would have only made an upgrade package as opposed to a full-price standalone game. I know it's a completely separate story, but let's be honest: Pokemon is not exactly renowned for its' storytelling in any capacity. It's renowned for its' tight, turn-based monster-catching battle system, and... that's it. If narrative mattered that much to people in their monster-battling games, Digimon would have a lot more fans than it does right now

It will probably be later than 2018, as everyone else said games take time to make and they are releasing Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon this year, I wouldn't be surprised if it was 2019 and I am saying late 2018 at the very earliest but I really do not see that happening. The supply of the switch has not caught up with demand yet and Nintendo doesn't want to release a Pokemon game if they do not have consoles on the shelf.
