patent trolls, it never gets old This isn't a patent troll situation. Wikipad was actually brought to market and sold by the company. It was actually a fairly cool idea, just not well executed. It was a Tegra 3 tablet with detatcgable controllers. Unfortunately, it didn't make it to market until waaaay after the Tegra 4 came out and the Tegra 3 was all but forgotten. They're still dreaming about a ban, and Nintendo definitely didn't get the idea from them.

One of the dumbest lawsuits I've ever heard of. The initial success of the Switch is probably the reason for the lawsuit. This other company is seeing how their "idea" is successful on another product and want their share of profits. If the Switch was a sales disaster right now, I bet they wouldn't care. These lawsuits only seem to come about when someone feels they aren't cashing in on what they feel is their idea when it's on another successful device or product.

I thought an idea had to be truely original for a lawsuit like this to hold up....not something along the lines of its the same color....Boomer_Kuwanga posted...

Boomer_Kuwanga posted...HayashiTakara posted...patent trolls, it never gets old It doesn't matter what their product is. It matters what the patented. If they patented "detachable controllers" and not just their design, things could be different. But to press a point, aren't most wireless controllers now "detachable" controllers? They can work when attached by a wire (for charging) and can work not attached to the home console.

Gotta love patent trolls. Every new idea ends up being "patented" by someone else without actually making use of said patent.

On one hand I don't want to nintendo to lose cause I want a switch and i'm glad nintendo has finally gone the region free route
On the other hand, nintendo losing would definitely be some karmic justice after all the lawsuits they filed on their own fans. All that being said, I think patent laws are stupid and need to go. Like imagine if say atari had a patent for a device that lets you play games on your television and could sue anyone who made a game console? where would we be today? Imagine if the first television maker filed a patent on them? All patents do is limit the growth of technology. Imagine if we weren't allowed to use wheels because the inventor of the wheel had a patent on it. Technology grows quicker when you can take someone elses idea and make it better than they did. |

The only actual lawsuit was filed by the Pokemon Company, to my knowledge. And in the case, it was a cafe owner using Pokemon characters to promote his establishment. It's s***ty on their part, but the dude isn't exactally blameless... He was charging money to get into the event. That's usually a huge no no. Everything else was cease and desist.

On one hand I don't want to nintendo to lose cause I want a switch and i'm glad nintendo has finally gone the region free route You couldn't be more wrong. Patents don't limit the growth of technology, they're essential for it. Without patents people wouldn't be rewarded for their innovations. It wouldn't matter who was able to come up with any new technology, because anyone who put out a new technology would simply be copied and outdone by a large rich corporation who could do it for less. The general thought would be "Why bother?". Like it or not, people want to and NEED to be fairly compensated for their inventions. Capitalism is what has driven almost all of our technical innovation. Removing that basic reward would only serve to diminish the reward people get for advancing technology. That said, this is a clear case of patient trolling, and will have a grand effect of nothing. Frankly I hope Nintendo countersues for legal fees.

It would be weird and kind of cool if this went through and only those of us with one now will ever be able to have them.
But honestly, this is pretty dumb. Obviously this won't go anywhere, and it only makes them look petty as hell for even attempting to sue Nintendo. Stop being jealous m8s. Your concept isn't even that similar.

Unless Nintendo uses the exact same system for attaching and detaching the controllers, the case holds no ground. Patents are there to protect the method to do something, not to prevent others from producing the same result with a different method.
SorrySleeping posted... It doesn't matter what their product is. It matters what the patented. If they patented "detachable controllers" and not just their design, things could be different. They can't just patent detachable controllers. They have to display the method they are using in detail for their detachable controllers as well before it can even get accepted as a patent. Unless there is only 1 way to achieve a result, a patent cannot prevent other companies from achieving the same result or something similar with a different method.

If the Switch wasn't very clearly an expansion/refinement of the WiiU concept, they might have something. Still probably not because there are tons of s***ty mobile controllers, but hey, at least we've all heard of their company now. Good for them; their frivolous lawsuit got people talking about them.

Ain't nobody gonna wanna buy from the company that tried to kill the big N. Also, I imagine it's mostly a bluff to scare Nintendo into settling. I doubt they actually want to end the Switch.

Nintendo is too honorable to steal someone else's idea, they are innovators not followers. They're businessmen. Wake up. There's no honor in business. In this particular instance i don't believe they're at fault, but I'm sure they've done their fair share of dirt too, like Disney and any other childhood hero companies you may have.
