- What's the point of an artificial shortage?
The point is to generate hype. Make it seem as if the product is hot. Apple does that all the time. It works wonders, for Apple at least, since people still buy iPhones over the superior Samsung phones. Not to mention iOS is a POS and Android is lightyears ahead in terms of OS. Artificial scarcity works. For Apple, at least...

As someone with 18 years experience in the financial industry, I can assure you that Nintendo does not gain anything with artificial scarcity, other than a bit of media hype. There isn't money to be made by not selling consoles. Prices driven up due to scarcity only benefits the scalpers and their illegitimate business practices. This isn't something that helps Nintendo at all.
Outside of lopsided demand to supply that would make consumers covet the "rare" Switch, how does this benefit Nintendo? People who can't find a Switch don't buy one, people without a Switch don't buy software. That would be like McDonalds hiding their hamburgers.
Every US Nintendo ever (sans virtual boy)...

You basically answer your own question TC.
They ship more units only the weeks 1st party games launch to maximize the sales of their own products. Did you notice there's 1st party bundle even when there's shortage? And people wonder why 3rd party hate Nintendo.

You basically answer your own question TC. Or maybe they actually managed to increase production like they said they would? Did that ever enter your mind?

We've been over this before.
-It makes investors happy as it makes it look like the product is more in demand than it really is. (Whereas 4.6 million in 4 months with plenty of stock on shelves would have been viewed negatively.) -It encourages more impulse sales + scalping because of the scarcity, thus getting more sales from people who might have not otherwise bought one, or two, or ten, because they think Switch is a hot product. -It avoids the negative press Wii U got. "Nintendo can't keep up with demand!" vs "It's Wii U all over again!" -It avoids talk of the game drought. Nobody minds that there's nothing worth playing yet when they can't even get the damn thing. -And then when Super Mario Odyssey comes out and massive shipments come in, they don't need to do it anymore because there's an actual game to generate hype. (Outside of Japan which loves Splatoon because tentacle waifus.) And then people will be scrambling to get Switches while they're in stock because the thing has a reputation of being hard to find. -Nintendo themselves can make some extra cash by scalping Switches (And NES Classics.) on eBay themselves. It's a smart business move that compensates for Switch being released too early. (They should have released it with Super Mario Odyssey.)

Perhaps in theory, having more of a new console available when a decent amount of games are available is more profitable than having a new console with not so many games available. Customers who bought the console later wouldn't have to wait as long for the bigger titles as early adopters, thus possibly strengthening the attach rate.
...but still, with Splatoon 2 being such a huge release in Japan, an artificial shortage would still make no sense. The game is already out, and there are still many people who can't play it due to a lack of consoles.

Drives up excitement for a product. I'm not saying Nintendo does this but other toy company's for sure have done it to pretty great success. Look up Cabbage Patch Kids in the 80s to see what I'm talking about.

when there is an artificial shortage
1. people try and buy it more to resell and get stuck with the consoles when they find out shortage was fake 2. people talk about the console 24/7 making others want to buy it 3. people wont say you are doomed and will blame low sales on the shortage. 4. you can increase the number of consoles you put out at anytime to make your sales huge for certain games.

Yeah yeah, get that reassurance out of your system. Maybe one day reality will smack you hard in the face, and you'll be forced to move out of mommy's basement and end your GameFAQS trolling career. LOL kirbyhoakage posted... when there is an artificial shortage Or maybe they just don't want to have millions of unsold consoles stuck in their hands again?

Except, there isn't one. Conspiracy theories are great when there isn't any evidence to prove otherwise, but it doesn't work here. Worry about UFOs and let the artificial bulls*** rest.

Nintendo themselves DON'T make the Switch from the ground up, they need to outsource components and that's out of their hands. Please stop.

SO MAD. First my Sonic mania pc version is cancelled until the 29th, and now I still won't be able to get the Switch version because Nintendo think they are cool for producing low amounts of units. playing a sonic game on pc..... wow this is sad lol.
